Whoopi Goldberg

During the ‘80s, she was taking acting lessons from Uta Hagen (a German-American actress) at the HB Studio in NYC. In 1985 she made her Broadway debut and caught the eye of Steven Spielberg. He offered her the lead role in the drama film The Color Purple. The production turned out very successful and received 11 Academy Awards nominations, including a nomination for Best Actress for Whoopi. She did not win the award then, but in 1990 she got her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the fantasy thriller Ghost.
